What would you put your good fortune towards?

Have you seen the queues at the betting shops? Nuts!

But maybe later I’ll go to the one downstairs of my office and get me some tickets at a chance to win one of them ‘Hongbao Jackpot’ things. If I win, I’ll either take my fortune to buy popcorn at the cinema, or buy a bunch of roses for Valentine’s Day.

Speaking of how expensive roses are on Valentines’ Day, didja know that if you were so inclined as to buy almost a hundred roses (someone tell me the significance of the 99 roses thing – why cannot be a square 100?), for either yourself or for to impress someone you’re impressed with, you could be in for a bit of a shock given the prices.

Come, I show you:

Far East Flora – 99 stalks – S$419.00 – $4.23 per stalk

Singaporeflowerstore.com – 99 stalks (in vase) – $376.00 – $3.80 per stalk

Prince’s Florist – 199 stalks – $599.00 – $3.01 per stalk

D’Petals – 99 stalks – $280 – $2.82 per stalk

i-GV.com – 99 stalks (plus vouchers) – $198.00 – $2.00 per stalk

I reckon florists get away with this disparity in prices only because, well, you know, the irrational behaviour of people who are in love enough to want to buy 99 roses when they know there’s not much use for the roses even before they wilt, shed and stink up the poor girl’s room.

iTunes is playing an illegal copy of I’ll Be Loving You from the album “I’ll Be Loving You” by 梁詠琪 of which I have the original CD.

99 = jiu-jiu (mandarin) = Forever. The beauty of multilinguillism. Mandarin, English, Geek.
Now, try 1314. That one more romantic, more pointless, more expensive.

100 roses = keeping each other company until sunset day. (I think). 😛

haha… use to work at a florist in my younger days. Things to know about valentine flowers.

    1) They are mostly dead (distributors FREEZE roses to stock up for valentine day) i.e. they won’t bloom
    2) They probably sell 3 months worth of flowers for 500% margin. To give you an idea, its S$9 for 20 stalks from a wholesaler on normal days. (P.S. I don’t know why you guys buy in the dozens when the wholesaler sells in the 20s) do the math and you will realise 100 rozes cos only S$45 dollars to the florist
    3) Florist earn enuff on valentines to cover 3 – 6 months their cost….

    YOU GUYS ARE SUCH SUCKERS.
Since working there, I never ever celebrated V Day again and never pay full price for flowers

  11. […] So how does this turn-out: prices during Valentine are more than double of what they are usually (Mr. Miyagi mentioned that FarEastFlora charges up to S$4.23 per rose-stalk), people go over the street embarrassed: guys feeling sissy because they’re carrying roses (I saw a guy with a bunch of flowers in a plastic bag, hahaha), girls feeling embarrassed because their bunch is smaller than that girl that they just saw passing by, both of them feel guilty about the way to expensive purchase that is gone/dead within the same week. Instead of this love-fest that Valentine was supposed to be, it suddenly became the fest of jealousy, anger and hatred. […]
