Taking down Army-related posts and pictures

I am taking down all army-related blog posts and pictures here as well as on Days Were The Those and Flickr, and will be asking for permission to blog and post pictures of my recent Exercise Wallaby trip to Shoalwater Bay, Central Queensland, with my unit, the 433rd Singapore Armoured Regiment.

I have also been asked to advise all and sundry that posting pictures and publishing articles about the Singapore Armed Forces should not be done without official sanction.

If you are so inclined to read articles about SAF matters, please visit officially sanctioned sites like MIW – where they have an officially sanctioned blog just like the one I set up at ‘Days Were The Those’.

Do not, by any means, propagate articles you have found cached on the internet from this site and others until, as I say, permission has been granted to me and others.

Meantime, there are so many other things to talk about. Reservist so boring one anyway hor?

I work in the defence industry and yes, they’re extremely uptight about photography.

“nono! you must remove the vehicle number!”
“cannot use! can see the camp!”
“you need to clear this first!”
    “have to ask MSD!”

    can die lor…

    this. is. ridiculous.

barring any further clarification (probably not forthcoming, considering how this government operates), i find this (that i can only assume is) military censorship completely and contemtuously ridiculous.

i’m sure i’m not alone when i say how much i enjoyed reading your army-related posts here and on dayswerethethose, and i honestly don’t see what’s so freakin sensitive about sharing your experiences that warrants a cease-and-desist of this level. if anything, these charmingly personal tales are the only things that evoke positive feelings about reservist training, shooting the breeze with old buddies, that kind of thing; what kind of brainless PR fool wants to censor that kind of discussion?

while they’re at it, why not censor our speech directly? i can’t wait for kopitiam ns-buddy talk to have to become “officially sanctioned” before we can proceed. wtf, mindeath. take that giant budget and do something constructive for once, yes?

  17. […] Taking down Army-related posts and pictures: Local blogger faces MINDEATH sanctions on blogging about NS. Really rather ridiculous, I feel. I liked our men in green (umm, uncomfortable-looking khaki office wear?) better when they were running Windows 95 and generally harmless and ineffectual online. [Miyagi.sg] […]

Initial reaction – stupid gahmen! But after thinking it over, it kind of makes sense for purposes of national security. There should be some degree of restriction on publishing information and photos of military matters online or in print.

I mean, the truth is: we’re a small country that’s not homogenously Muslim, surrounded by two much larger countries, both predominantly Muslim, both with some degree of fundamentalist/extremist presence. Our military’s not particularly big, but we do what we can because we have to.

It doesn’t seem very harmful to take a candid shot of yourself and your buds during some training session, but what if you accidentally capture something in the background that’s actually of strategic importance? And multiply this by the hundreds of thousands of people going through NS or reservist, and chances are good that someone’s going to slip up somewhere.

I, too, enjoyed reading about your army stories, particularly because, being a girl and all, I’ve never had a chance to experience them for myself. But I’m sure the SAF doesn’t want to dedicate time and resources to scouring all the various online blogs and other communities to see if the information being divulged is or is not critical. Thus, they just issue a blanket C&D. Not necessarily the ideal solution, but probably the most logistically sound.

Is it censorship? Yes, yes it is. Censorship in general makes me uncomfortable, and our government doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to protecting the individual’s freedom of expression. But in this particular instance, I can see why they’re enforcing it.

come on, sg not that big… certain camps are so near HDB flats that ppl living nearby can just use a good quality camera and take a nice photo of the camp including, secret equipments, vehicles of those colonels and generals etc. Though most of the time those equipment would be inside hangars and when they do come out, they are camouflaged.

Think the gahmen scare singaporean get the wrong information from mr miyagi and other bloggers so they start to hunt them down and make them apply for permit to talk about army mah.. like the hong lim speakers corner.. all these for our “freedom of speech”.

I’m an avid reader of dayswerethethose and I find that there really isn’t much sensitive stuff that isn’t already known to the masses who have already gone through NS. Not like Miyagi has published top secret photos of a secret giant robot mecha hidden in Bukit Timah hill…

stuff like a LCP’s account of his participation in the NDP is stuff that makes for good reading and evokes fond memories.

Mindef director of public affairs Benedict Lim was quoted “While many pictures may not be sensitive, shots of thing like the inside of vehicles… should not be placed in a public domain like a website.”

To further illustrate the point, our newspaper published a 21×12.5cm(I really got measure one Ok!) “COLOURED SHOT OF INSIDE OF AN ARMY VEHICLE!!!”. Well done SundayTimes! Love their sense of humor.

Allow me to salute your religiosity and perhaps even unrelenting persistence in the posting of army-related blogs and photos! And I must give you credit for your oozing creativity, both in the layout of the website as well as the use of language!

Could do better with some profanities, haha!

Anyway, being into things military, I’ve grown sick and tired viewing military pics manufactured in the US. It’s good to see our very own soldiers in action. While our militarymen and weaponry may be less than impressive and pale in comparison to the marines of the West, the least these photos and stories could depict is: With or without brawn, at least we have the brains to offer. It’s been a joy viewing your blog, Mr Miyagi! Jia you!
