Long and wide week

Last week was an impossibly busy week which finished with two consecutive days of Writers’ Festival commitments. We’d have liked to have sat in for the comedy writing seminar and various other events at the Festival, but being participants of the Festival itself, we didn’t have the time to.

The brand-spanking new National Library is really something though. I haven’t been to such a decent library in Singapore, and I don’t believe there are any other libraries in the region that match up to this either. (Granted, one doesn’t go on holidays to sit in libraries, but y’know?)

Tiring as the week might have been, I don’t think any of us would have traded our weekend in for anything else, though mrbrown kept asking if we could pop by at COMEX during our break on Saturday. (To which I said, siao ah, so crowded, dowan!)

Our talks at the Festival were fun to conduct, and it was extremely gratifying to have been able to help inform non-bloggers of some of the nonsense things that bloggers get up to – like posting funny pictures on Flickr, using Bloglines to stalk people and searching Technorati to see if people are talking behind our backs.

We also talked about the things we believed in – that the internet was invented in order that people could link to each other without asking for permission, that if you think your blog is private, you’re seriously deluded, and that you do not build communities with blogs, you just help communities communicate better.

Spending a little time with Cory Doctorow was a highlight My brain is now quite full and I think we’ve got enough ideas to last us a couple of months at least. It was also great talking to people who attended our talks as well as at the ‘Bloggers’ Networking Night‘, at Rouge, which could have been slightly better. Perhaps waive the $15 cover charge. Perhaps if Rouge staff were a little faster with our drinks. Perhaps if we shot the house band that did their infernal noise check while we were there doing our networking thing. Yes, the damned guitars and drums work. Damn noisy, can?

OK, so now I’ve written a decent sized post about some decent event I attended, instead of, as a member of the audience at the talk said, “…(Mr Miyagi and his) writing about night life and chio bu pictures.”

But Xiaxue’s asked why she’s never been featured as one of Mr Miyagi’s chio bu. No reason not to feature, so here ’tis, Mr Miyagi’s chio bu of the week:

Xiaxue at the Writers’ Festival: “Eventually all things merge into one, and a river runs through it

Surf stops:

iTunes is playing an illegal copy of Thunderbird from the album “Master of Disaster” by John Hiatt of which I have the original CD.
