This may be a stretch for some people.

In the days before the concrete grenade throwing gallery, all there is a pile of sandbags to act as a shield. You throw the grenade into a pit.

A recruit in a very similar situation, dropped his live grenade. The platoon commander next to him, fell on the the grenade. You know what happened next.

Strangely this was left out in the ST article. Bloody typical.
